The Cansiglio becomes a set for Hollywood: Ridley Scott and Jacob Elordi arrive for the thriller ‘The Dog Stars’.

The magic of cinema lands in the Veneto forests: from 12 to 16 May, the Cansiglio Plain is transformed into an exceptional film set. Director Ridley Scott, famous for masterpieces such as Gladiator, Alien and Blade Runner, will direct the filming of the apocalyptic thriller ‘The Dog Stars’, based on the novel by Peter Heller.

The film, produced by 20th Century Fox with a $100 million budget, has a crew of 500 and a thousand extras. The cast includes leading names such as Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce and the lead actor Jacob Elordi, who has taken over from Paul Mescal.

After the first take scheduled for 29 April at Lake Bordano in Friuli, the production moves to Cansiglio, involving locations such as Vallorch, Le Rotte and Genzianella. Hotels and restaurants between Fregona, Vittorio Veneto and Cison di Valmarino are already sold out, while the Veneto Film Commission emphasises the importance of the event for the relaunch of local tourism.

For security and privacy reasons, access to the Cansiglio Plain and forestry activities will be prohibited from 12 to 16 May. An ordinance issued by the mayor of Fregona, Giacomo De Luca, has ordered the closure of the provincial road between the junction for Pizzoc and Pian Osteria, from 8 am to 8 pm.

Set in a post-pandemic future, The Dog Stars tells the story of a widowed pilot who takes refuge in an isolated hangar, moving only to fish. A story of loneliness and survival, which finds its perfect setting in the uncontaminated landscapes of Cansiglio.

With a production of this size and the presence of international stars, expectations are high: fans and onlookers alike hope to catch a glimpse of some familiar faces among the woods of the Veneto region, in one of the most ambitious productions of the next film season.
