Tridentine Diocesan Museum

The Tridentine Diocesan Museum is located in Trento in the Palazzo Pretorio in Piazza Duomo, near the San Vigilio cathedral. Founded in 1903, it is one of the first diocesan museums in Italy. Here you can admire the works of the rich artistic production of the diocese, created between the 13th and 19th centuries, the treasure of the Cathedral and the testimonies of the Council of Trent.

The exhibition in the Tridentine Diocesan Museum begins on the ground floor with paintings and prints relating to the iconography of the city of Trento between the 17th and 19th centuries. The two stairwells contain some important iconographic evidence of the Council of Trent. The picture gallery, divided into various sections, holds a selection of the most significant works of local production from the Middle Ages to Neoclassicism.

In the Diocesan Museum of Trento you can also admire a small and precious collection of illuminated manuscripts, the section dedicated to works of wooden sculpture, created between the 14th and 16th centuries by the most important workshops of the diocese, the collections of Flemish tapestries and liturgical vestments and the treasure of Trento Cathedral.

The museum is also responsible for the custody of the early Christian Basilica of St. Vigilius and the archaeological finds from the excavations in the cathedral's basement. In 2000, a branch was opened in Villa Lagarina to display a nucleus of works of art and ecclesiastical furnishings commissioned by the noble Lodron family.
