On the sunny slopes between San Sigismondo and Terento, local farmers carefully maintain the alpine landscape. Flowering meadows, fragrant woods, and natural vegetation create the perfect habitat for butterflies. Along the trail, information panels provide fascinating insights into these delicate creatures, while original benches invite walkers to pause and rest.
At the very start, it is worth visiting the beautiful Gothic church of San Sigismondo, one of South Tyrol’s finest architectural monuments. First mentioned in 1363, the current building was erected between 1449 and 1489. Its main altar (1440) is one of the oldest and most important polyptych altars in South Tyrol.
During the walk, you will also encounter traces of natural history, such as glacial erratic boulders, and hear legends like that of the giants of Casteldarne, who are said to have destroyed the Guggenschlössl castle with huge stones. A ruin still recalls those wild times.
After passing the Schiffereggerhof farm, the trail loops back to the starting point.
