Merano High Mountain Trail: Hike through the Gorge of 1,000 Steps

Starting from the mountain station of the Texel cable car in Parcines, the hike begins with a short uphill stretch leading to the charming Giggelberg farmstead. From there, follow trail no. 24 of the Merano High Mountain Trail, which runs at an average altitude of about 1,500 meters, offering spectacular views over Val Venosta and the peaks of the Texel Group.

The route becomes more challenging after the Hochforch farmstead, where two gorges await: the Brunnental Valley and the famous Lahnbach Valley, known as the Gorge of 1,000 Steps. In reality, there are “only” 989 steps, but their variety—metal, wooden, or carved into stone—makes this stage unique and adventurous. Climbing through the gorge requires some training, but the reward is a full immersion in the power of nature, shaped by water over centuries.

After the gorge, the trail leads to the Pirchhof farmstead and then to the Linthof farmstead, from where the path continues almost flat. Along the way, several traditional inns invite hikers to stop and enjoy typical South Tyrolean dishes.

Finally, following trail no. 10, you reach the mountain station of the Unterstell cable car in Naturno. The descent by cable car takes you to the hamlet of Compaccio, from where you can easily return to the center of Naturno, passing the church, the Hotel Lindenhof, and the picturesque Via dei Campi.
