The shortest and most scenic walk in Sappada, ideal for families and for anyone seeking a peaceful break in nature.
Just a few steps from the heart of Borgata Bach, next to the Small Museum of the Great War, begins one of Sappada’s most loved and accessible trails: the short route leading to the Mühlbach Waterfalls, a small natural gem set within a cool and silent gorge.
Trail Description
The path starts to the right of the museum and immediately enters the forest, crossing two characteristic wooden footbridges. From here, the trail closely follows the Rio del Mulino, whose waters descend from springs located beneath the Olbe Lakes, carving over time a small canyon with soft and fascinating shapes.
The walk is short and easy, suitable even for children, yet it surprises with the richness of its environment:
- rocky walls with greenish hues, typical of local limestone formations
- clearly visible stratifications, perfect for geology enthusiasts
- shaded and fresh sections, ideal on warm summer days
Following the stream for just a few minutes, you reach the main waterfall, a scenic cascade that forms a small natural amphitheatre. It’s a lovely spot to pause, listen to the sound of the water and enjoy a moment of tranquillity.
Flora and Curiosities
In August, raspberry plants grow near the start of the trail along the forest edge. With a bit of attention, you may also spot rare yellow bellflowers and a few alpine roses, species typical of the cool and humid environments of the Eastern Alps.
