The hike from Cima Sappada to Piani del Cristo is one of the most scenic and accessible walks in the area, ideal for families and hikers with little experience. The well‑marked trail, free of technical difficulties, reaches a maximum altitude of 1,420 m and unfolds in a natural environment rich in water, forests and Alpine views.
Route Description
From Cima Sappada, near the church, follow the paved road that runs through the houses of the village. After about 1 km, take the dirt road on the left marked “Sorgenti del Piave – Val Sesis”. The path follows the Piave stream on its right side and climbs gently along a recently restored trail. Wooden walkways and logs help you cross the small streams that feed the river, making the route varied and enjoyable.
The landscape is particularly charming: smooth rocks shaped by crystal‑clear water, red spruce forests, the scent of resin and the constant sound of the Piave accompany every step. After a short ascent on wooden steps, cross the main road and continue on a new section of trail that leads into an area shaped by ancient glacial deposits. Here the stream creates beautiful viewpoints, perfect for a photo stop.
The route ends at Rifugio Piani del Cristo, a welcoming and panoramic spot ideal for a relaxing break before returning.
A Nature‑Rich Itinerary
Depending on the season, you may encounter many Alpine plant species along the way: kidney vetch, dandelion, buttercup, wood cranesbill, dark columbine, mountain cornflower, bearded bellflower, martagon lily and many more. A true paradise for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.
