The Oltradige Cycle Path

The Oltradige cycle path is one of the most scenic routes in South Tyrol: a 17‑km itinerary connecting Bolzano, Appiano and Caldaro, crossing the heart of the region’s most renowned wine‑growing area. The route follows the former railway line that once linked Caldaro to Bolzano, making the ride especially enjoyable thanks to long flat sections and characteristic tunnels carved into the rock.

The starting point is Ponte Adige, near Firmiano Castle. From here, you follow a short stretch of the Appiano–Merano cycle path until the level crossing, where the main route begins. The ascent is gentle and steady up to the San Michele/Appiano station, passing through the villages of Frangarto, Cornaiano and San Paolo, surrounded by vineyards, orchards and wide views over the valley.

Once in San Michele, an underpass leads to the Crocevia area, a strategic junction where you can choose your final destination:

  • towards Lake Caldaro, following the signs for the “Ora Cycle Route”,
  • or towards Caldaro village, along the “Oltradige Promenade”, shared with pedestrians.

The road leading to the lake is also used by residents and agricultural vehicles, so some caution is recommended. The entire route can be enjoyed all year round, thanks to the mild climate and favourable exposure.
