Craftsmanship and entrepreneurial activity are arts that have been passed down for generations among the men and women of Val Sarentino, near Bolzano. Thanks to the artisans’ manual skill and dedication, beautiful ideas and high‑quality products are created every day from wood and raw materials sourced from the South Tyrolean territory.
Sarner Gschick
Sarner Gschick was founded with the aim of promoting the centuries‑old craft tradition, its production methods, and the transmission of knowledge from Val Sarentino. The name brings together six local artisans: a wood sculptor, a peacock‑feather embroiderer, a woodturner, a hand weaver, a goldsmith, and a stonemason. What unites these masters is their love for their craft, the pride of presenting visitors with products rooted in an ancient tradition, and the invaluable talent of creating unique pieces.
Drechslerei Fritz Workshop
Drechslerei Fritz is the workshop of an expert woodturner. This ancient profession involves working metal or wood using a lathe, where the raw piece is fixed and rotated along a longitudinal and transverse axis while special tools shape it into the desired form. A simple sketch of the final product helps the master turner achieve the exact figure envisioned.
To showcase the entire production process—from the growth and felling of trees, especially Swiss pine, to the completion of the final piece—the Drechslerei Fritz workshop offers demonstrations. Here, visitors have the wonderful opportunity to watch master woodturner Fritz Unterkalmsteiner at work.
The artisan produces a wide variety of items: plates and bowls, boxes and spheres, wooden lamps, rustic furniture, gift items (cutting boards, globes, etc.), rocking horses, spinning wheels, and altars. Custom pieces can be made upon request.
