Handicrafts in Val Sarentino

Craftsmanship and entrepreneurship is an art that has been handed down for generations among the men and women of Val Sarentino, near Bolzano. Thanks to the craftsmanship and perseverance of the artisans, every day beautiful ideas and high-quality products are created from wood and raw materials from the South Tyrolean region.

Sarner Gschick

Sarner Gschick was founded with the aim of publicising the centuries-old tradition of handicrafts, production methods and passing on knowledge of the Sarntaler handicrafts. A name that brings together five local craftsmen in the guise of a wood sculptor, a peacock feather embroiderer, a turner, a hand weaver and an expert goldsmith. What unites these masters is undoubtedly the love for their craft, the pride in presenting tourists with a product rooted in a centuries-old tradition and the inestimable talent for creating and conceiving unique pieces.

Fritz Turnery Showcase

Drechslerei Fritz is the showcase of an expert turner. This is an ancient profession that involves working metal or wood with a turning machine or lathe on which the workpiece, still unfinished, is fixed and rotated along a longitudinal and transverse axis with special tools until the desired workpiece is obtained. A simple drawing of the final product helps the master turner to obtain exactly the figure shown.

In order to discover the entire production process, from the growth and felling of the trees, mainly stone pine, to the final work, the Drechslerei Fritz workshop organises demonstrations. Here you can take the fantastic opportunity to watch master craftsman Fritz Unterkalmsteiner at work.

Demonstration duration: approx. 20 minutes
Opening hours: mid-June to mid-September, every Thursday from 10 am-12 noon and 2-6 pm.
