Moos-Schulthaus Castle

Castel Moos, also known as Schulthaus, stands in the charming Oltradige area above San Michele/Appiano, one of the regions with the highest concentration of castles and historic residences in South Tyrol. The building, with its fascinating blend of architectural styles, is the result of centuries of transformations and expansions.

The oldest part is the medieval watchtower, which in 1356 was converted into an elegant hunting lodge. Further enlargements in 1550 and 1650 turned the structure into the residence of the Schulthaus family, who lived here until 1850. After a period of decline, the castle passed to a farming family, and in 1958 it was purchased by Bolzano native Walther Amonn, who initiated a meticulous restoration. During the works, valuable 15th‑century frescoes were uncovered, and the building regained its original appearance.

In the early 1980s, the Walther Amonn Foundation was established with the aim of opening the castle to the public and enhancing its historical and artistic heritage. Today, Castel Moos – Schulthaus is a captivating museum where visitors can admire the 15th‑century frescoes depicting hunting scenes and the famous “War of Cats and Mice”, one of the oldest satirical illustrations in the Alpine region.

The interiors preserve beautifully restored rooms: the late‑Gothic bedroom with original furnishings, the splendid Gothic Stube from the early 16th century with barrel vaulting and carved wooden beams, and the small servants’ stube displaying period work tools. In the cellar, visitors can explore a collection of works by Tyrolean artists of the early 20th century, enriching the museum experience.
