The Lake of Costalovara, nestled at 1,176 metres above sea level on the Renon plateau, reveals itself to visitors as a small Alpine gem surrounded by quiet forests and gentle hills. Just a few minutes from Soprabolzano, this natural body of water offers a suspended, timeless atmosphere where the pace slows down and nature becomes the true protagonist.
Summer at Lake Costalovara: swimming and nature
In summer, the lake turns into an oasis of freshness. Its clear waters, among the cleanest in South Tyrol, invite visitors to dive in for a revitalising swim or relax along the shore, wrapped in the scent of mountain meadows and the soft rustle of the trees. A simple and pleasant path circles the lake, ideal for a leisurely walk that reveals the landscape from every angle. The lake’s history stretches back centuries: originally a natural basin, it was expanded in the 18th century to supply water to local mills and sawmills, and still today it preserves an authentic charm that recalls traditional mountain life.
The lake is home to a varied fish population, attracting anglers from across the region. Fishing is possible in a peaceful, green setting (always check local regulations and permits).
Winter: skating and fun on the ice
When winter arrives, Lake Costalovara changes its appearance. Its surface freezes completely, becoming a beautiful natural ice rink where visitors can skate surrounded by the muffled silence of snow. Cold days bring the joy of gliding across the ice, watching spontaneous hockey matches or trying one’s hand at stock sport, an Alpine tradition that finds an ideal stage here. Before stepping onto the lake, it is always advisable to check that the ice is safe and suitable.
