Museum in the clouds or Messner Mountain Museum Dolomites

The 29 June 2002 at the peak of Monte Rite, at 2,181 m, in the heart of the Dolomites, the international Museum of the Mountain has been opened with the name of Museo delle Nuvole (Museum in the Clouds).

The project, wanted by the Southtirolean mountaineer Reinhold Messner and sponsored by the Region Veneto, wants to relaunch a great environmental heritage such as the mountain one.

Messner put at the isposal of the visitors his great collection of findings, pictures, researches, masterpieces etc. for telling the true nature of mountains. The museum has renowned in its contents and organization. Indeed it hosts a special collection of photos entitled "ancient life", an exhibition of mini Cadore houses, made by Giuseppe Toscani, there are new canvases, watercolours and different setting up within the crystal domes, with dedicated to the Ladin origins of Messner.

Monte Rite has been chosen for its extraordinary panoramic position since it offers a unique sight on the mounts below (Monti Pallidi): Moiazza, Civetta, Marmolada, Pelmo, Tofane, Sorapis, Antelao, Marmarole, Tudaio. It overhangs in the east all the Centre Cadore, in the north the valley of the Boite closed by Cortina d'Ampezzo, in the west the valley of Zoldo and in the south Forcella and Cibiana.

The museum has been built on a pre-existent fort of the First World War that rose in the territory of Cibiana di Cadore.
The rooms of the fort not in use, among which there are the battery, the barracks, the powder magazine and the storehouse have been restored. Besides the Museum, a multimedia room has been equipped in the ex powder magazine, a room dedicated to the tourists in the ex barracks, with restaurant and other features and a youth hostel (with 20 beds) in the ex little barrack.

The observatory has been built on a pre-existent structure. Materials used, metal elements and high transparency glass, as the structure, with the edges looking each at the surrounding great Dolomites peaks, want to remember the Dolomia stone crystals and underline the beauty of the landscape.
The buildings are linked together by the restored pre-existent tunnels, which were part of the previous fort.

A direct link service, made by Dolomitibus, from Calalzo railway station to Forcella Cibiana is available. From here it is possible to climb to Monte Rite peak on foot or by "shuttle" bus.
