The route leading to the Rifugio Mulàz “Giuseppe Volpi”, located near the Mulàz Pass in the northern sector of the Pale di San Martino, is one of the most scenic and captivating treks in the entire Val Venegia. From the green meadows of the valley floor, the trail climbs across grassy slopes, rocky steps and scree, offering an ever‑growing sequence of spectacular views over the Dolomite peaks. The itinerary follows the Quinto Scalet Trail, dedicated to the alpine guide of the same name.
Start: Pian dei Casoni
The hike begins at the large parking area of Pian dei Casoni, the gateway to Val Venegia. The trail starts on the left side of the dirt road that connects Malga Venegiota to the Campigol della Vezzana. After a few minutes you reach the small hut of the service cableway for the refuge, where the junction with trail no. 749—leading to Passo di Valles—appears.
Here you turn right and begin the ascent through a sparse larch forest that leads towards the base of the Mulàz walls.
Towards the walls of the Mulàz
After passing the junction with trail no. 710A coming from Baita Segantini, the landscape gradually opens onto the valley below, shaped by a wide gravel riverbed descending towards the meadows of Venegia.
The trail continues to climb along long grassy slopes, where some sections are aided by rock‑cut steps and handrail cables, useful on the steeper stretches.
The rocky basin and the final ascent to Passo del Mulàz
Reaching the edge of a stony basin, the path bends sharply northward and rises first over a broad grassy shoulder, then across rocky steps, scree and boulders. The ascent is demanding but always well marked, leading to the panoramic Passo del Mulàz, framed by imposing Dolomite walls.
Arrival at Rifugio Mulàz “Giuseppe Volpi”
From the pass, the trail traverses at altitude and then descends slightly towards the nearby Rifugio Mulàz “Giuseppe Volpi”, one of the most atmospheric mountain huts in the Pale di San Martino. The view opens onto a dramatic landscape dominated by spires, ridges and vertical rock faces.
