An exciting itinerary that leads into the heart of the Great War, where nature and memory intertwine along one of the most evocative routes of the Alpe Cimbra. The Forra del Lupo – Wolfsschlucht, the “wolf’s gorge”, is a natural corridor set between towering rock walls, shaped by time and transformed by the Austro‑Hungarians into a defensive line of trenches, loopholes and shelters carved into the mountain.
The trail offers spectacular views over the Upper Terragnolo Valley, the Borcola Pass, and the imposing Pasubio massif, the “sacred mountain” of Trentino and the scene of fierce battles.
A panoramic route along trail SAT 137
The hike begins at Cógola di Serrada, where trail SAT 137 climbs steadily along the right side of the valley. The forest gradually opens up, revealing increasingly wide views until reaching the most iconic section of the route: the Forra del Lupo, a narrow and vertical passage offering a unique perspective on the rock walls and the landscape below.
Beyond the gorge, the trail continues toward its final destination: Forte Dosso delle Somme, one of the most important fortifications of the Alpe Cimbra, now a panoramic viewpoint and an impressive testament to Austro‑Hungarian military engineering.
Alpine environment and safety
The section inside the gorge requires caution: the presence of vertical rock faces may cause falling stones, making a protective helmet advisable. In summer, the route is exposed and lacks water sources, so carrying an adequate supply is essential.
