Lana di Gais

Challenging and fascinating hike through history and nature: Lana di Gais is a destination for experienced hikers, immersed in authentic alpine landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

The hike to Lana di Gais is one of the most intense and rewarding in the Plan de Corones area, recommended only for well-trained hikers accustomed to steep trails. The route follows historic and scenic paths through forests, alpine farms, and rare examples of mountain life.

The trail begins at the parish church in Villa Ottone, following a path that leads in about 30 minutes to the Gasthof Bauhof, located at 1,000 m above sea level. This first stretch is easy and already offers interesting views over the Gais valley.

From Bauhof, the hike continues along trail no. 17, climbing for about 2 hours to reach the alpine farms of Lana di Gais, at an elevation of 1,500 m. With over 660 m of elevation gain, this is one of the steepest and most demanding routes in South Tyrol. The ascent winds through dense woods and rocky sections, requiring sure footing, stamina, and solid physical condition.

Lana di Gais is known for its mountain school, one of the last perfectly preserved alpine school buildings. This structure is a rare example of rural architecture and offers insight into the educational life once common in high-altitude communities. Guided visits are available by reservation.

There are no refreshment points along the trail, so hikers must bring water and supplies. The return follows trail no. 16 or no. 17A, leading back to the starting point via a slightly less steep but still challenging route.
