The Monte Sommo, also known as Sambock, is the symbolic mountain of Falzes and one of the most scenic viewpoints in the Plan de Corones holiday area. From its summit (2396 m), you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama stretching from the Dolomites of Braies and Fanes-Sennes to the Zillertal Alps and the Rieserferner Group.
The hike begins at the parking area in Plata (1600 m), above Falzes, following trail marker 66A with the sign “Sambock”. The route first follows a forest road and then a path, leading through a quiet forest and past a hunter’s hut. Emerging from the woods, the trail continues across alpine pastures until reaching the Platte hill (2175 m), a natural balcony perfect for a short break. From here, the route continues north along the broad grassy ridge to the summit of Monte Sommo (2396 m), reached in about 2.5–3 hours. The return follows the same route.
For more experienced hikers, there is a challenging variant. From the summit, follow the northern ridge along the red trail markers, tackling some exposed sections, one of which is equipped with fixed ropes. The path descends to a saddle (2365 m), then turns left towards the Plata lakes and Plata Alpine Hut, where you can rest before returning to the starting point.
The hike starts from Plata, which can be reached by car from Brunico via Falzes up to the hamlet at 1600 m. Alternatively, you can take bus 421 or 422 from the Brunico Mobility Center to Falzes (Town Hall stop) and then walk along trail markers 18 and 19 to Plata (about 1.5 hours on foot).
