Ski Mountaineering Tour to Picco della Croce

The Picco della Croce (3,132 m) is one of the most iconic peaks of the Fundres Mountains, in the Zillertal Alps. It is considered a classic ski mountaineering tour in Val di Vizze, starting from the small village of Burgum (1,372 m). The route is long and demanding, but offers spectacular views of the Dolomites, the Isarco Valley, and Vipiteno.

Ascent Route

  • Start from Burgum (1,372 m): follow the forest road on the right side of the valley up to Burgumalm.
  • Valley floor: continue east to the unnamed saddle at the end of the characteristic “FockenzĂ€hne” (pig’s teeth).
  • Towards the ridge: proceed northwest along the wide back of the mountain, keeping left of the Karjöchl ridge, until reaching a small saddle.
  • Ski depot: along the southwest ridge, after about 100 m you find the ideal spot to leave your skis.
  • Final section: cross the southern slope and tackle a short, easy climb leading directly to the summit (3,132 m).

Descent

The descent follows the same route as the ascent, with wide and skiable slopes that require caution, especially in transformed or windblown snow conditions.

Additional Notes

  • Panoramas: from the summit you enjoy exceptional views of the Dolomites, the Gran Pilastro, and the Lago Selvaggio.
  • Support points: along the route you find Burgumalm and, higher up, the Bressanone Hut (2,270 m), useful as an intermediate stop.
  • Snow conditions: always check avalanche bulletins; slopes below the saddle may be subject to dangerous accumulations.
