Bunker Hike in Sares-Mantana

The Bunker Hike is a circular trail in the Puster Valley that blends historical memory with natural beauty and local food culture. Starting from the church parking lot in Montal, the route winds through meadows and forests, passing two bunkers from World War II.

The bunkers in Sares-Mantana were part of the “Vallo Alpino Littorio”, a defensive line hastily built between 1939 and 1941, following Austria’s annexation by Nazi Germany. Though never used in combat, these structures remain important historical and architectural landmarks.

The trail is about 4 km long, easy and well-marked, suitable for families and casual hikers. It features two main bunkers:

Bunker No. 10, once equipped with rifles and machine guns, now accessible only with a guide.

The “Genussbunker”, a former military shelter turned into a cheese aging bunker, where South Tyrolean and international cheeses are matured for months or years into unique delicacies.

Both bunkers are privately owned and can only be visited with a guide. In summer, weekly guided tours are organized and can be booked at local tourist offices.

This hike is perfect for those who want to explore local history, discover hidden corners of the Puster Valley, and experience alpine gastronomy in an authentic setting.
