The Dolomieu Trail is a panoramic route that crosses one of the most scenic slopes of Mount Faloria, following part of CAI Trail 212 along the ridge of the Crepe di Faloria. Inaugurated in 2005, the trail pays tribute to Déodat de Dolomieu, the French geologist who first identified dolomite, the rock that gave the Dolomites their name.
This easy 4‑km trail is ideal for families, beginners, and anyone looking for a panoramic walk without technical difficulties. The route is usually walked downhill in about 1 hour and 40 minutes, offering spectacular views over the Ampezzo basin and the surrounding peaks.
Starting point: Rifugio Faloria
The hike begins at Rifugio Faloria (2,120 m), which can be reached by cable car from Cortina or on foot for those who prefer a more active approach. From here, the trail follows an open, sunny ridge with sweeping views over the Dolomites.
Along the Crepe di Faloria ridge
The path descends gently through meadows, rocky outcrops, and natural viewpoints. The constant, wide‑open view over the valley makes the Dolomieu Trail one of the most photographed routes in the area.
Arrival in Rio Gere and return to Cortina
The itinerary ends in Rio Gere, where you can:
- return to Cortina by public transport
- continue on foot along Trail 211 to the El Brite de Larieto farmhouse and then follow Trail 204 to Rifugio Mietres
- or take Trail 209, which follows the ski slope and crosses the road from Passo Tre Croci down to Cortina
These options allow you to extend the Dolomieu Trail or turn it into a personalized loop.
