Miliarium dedicated to Carus and Carinus – Chienes

The excursion starts in the village of Casteldarne (Ehrenburg), in the municipality of Chienes/Kiens, at about 794 m above sea level. The route forms an easy, mostly flat loop, ideal for anyone looking for a cultural walk immersed in nature.

1. From the centre of Casteldarne towards Le Case

From the starting point, a comfortable path leads through the countryside of Chienes, passing meadows and traditional farmsteads. The trail is simple, with gentle ups and downs, and heads towards Le Case, located along the SS49 of the Val Pusteria.

2. The highlight: the Miliario di Caro e Carino

Upon reaching the area of Le Case, at km 27.443 of the SS49, you find the Miliario di Caro e Carino, brought to light in 1946. The artefact was discovered by Mr. Plankesteiner during agricultural work near his Ausserhof farm, together with two uninscribed fragments and a bronze coin of Emperor Hadrian.

Today, the miliarium is visible along the route and represents one of the most important Roman testimonies in the Val Pusteria.

3. Return to Casteldarne

After visiting the miliarium, the path continues through pleasant stretches of woodland and cultivated fields, closing the loop and bringing visitors back to Casteldarne.
