Pergine Castle

The turreted complex of Pergine Castle stands between the Fersina and Brenta basins on the foothills of Mount Tegazzo. It is partially open to visitors, while part of the castle is used as a hotel and restaurant. Since November 2018, the CastelPergine Onlus Foundation has owned the castle, having purchased it from the Oss Ringold family.

History

Pergine Castle appears in numerous 12th‑century documents that attest to its ancient origins. Built on a prehistoric hillfort (castelliere), it first belonged to the Lords of Pergine, later passed through various hands including the Dukes of Austria, and finally, in 1531, became the property of Prince‑Bishop Bernardo Cles.

Considered an example of a medieval Alpine fortress‑residence, the structure of Pergine Castle is organised around two concentric defensive walls leading up to the summit, where the Grande Torre and the baronial palace stand.

The central tower is of great architectural value, featuring a distinctive Gothic structure built over an earlier Romanesque base.

In 1900, after being sold to a German company that carried out a rather questionable restoration, the castle was converted into a hotel and restaurant, although the ground and first floors remained open to the public. In 1956 it was purchased by the Oss family, and since late 2018 it has been owned by the CastelPergine Onlus Foundation.
