Caldes Castle

Caldes Castle belongs to the Autonomous Province of Trento and in summer it hosts performances and cultural events. It stands near the village of Caldes in the Val di Sole and resembles a large manor house more than a traditional fortress.

Its architectural style reflects late‑Gothic influences typical of fortified noble residences in the Alpine regions, as well as the many renovations that over time removed the outer walls, the drawbridge passageway, and the external bulwarks. According to legend, a young noblewoman was imprisoned in the room known as “the prison”, on the upper floor of the tower, after falling in love with a court minstrel.

History

Built in 1230 by the Cagnò family, the castle was transformed into a residence in the mid‑15th century. In 1464 it was donated to the Thun family, who incorporated the ancient keep into a square‑plan residential complex. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the building was further enlarged with the addition of a small northern tower. Later it passed into the hands of a local family, and it has recently been restored. Today it hosts exhibitions and cultural events.
