Day of the Devils in Vipiteno

Event date 05-12-2025

Every year, on the evening of December 5th, the historic center of Vipiteno/Sterzing comes alive with the traditional St. Nicholas parade, one of the most spectacular events in South Tyrol and the entire Alpine region.

The tradition

St. Nicholas walks through the streets of the town accompanied by his servant Ruprecht and the Moors, who help distribute gifts to children. Keeping order are the “Tuifl” devils, masked figures with whips and blackened faces, recalling ancient customs linked to the beginning of winter. Originally, this tradition was meant to drive away the spirits of darkness and frost, bringing protection and good fortune to the community.

The parade route

The procession begins at 6:00 pm from the northern part of the old town, crosses the Città Vecchia to Piazza Città, passes under the impressive Tower of the Twelve, and continues to the end of Città Nuova. Before the parade, St. Nicholas visits several homes in Vipiteno, always accompanied by his little devils.

A unique event in the Dolomites

The Tuifltog of Vipiteno is much more than a simple parade: it is a cultural and folkloric experience that combines spectacle, tradition, and Christmas atmosphere. With striking costumes, music, and ancient rituals, this event is one of the most authentic and engaging celebrations in the Dolomites and South Tyrol.
