Lake Lavarone

Once described as “the cleanest lake in Italy”, Lake Lavarone has long been admired for its tranquillity — even by Sigmund Freud, who loved walking along its peaceful shores. Nestled in a natural basin, Lake Lavarone covers 64,000 square metres, with an average depth of 7.4 metres and a maximum depth of 17 metres.

Located on the Lavarone Plateau, the lake lies in an area marked by fierce battles during the First World War, as shown by the many military structures and forts now transformed into memorial sites. The Peace Trail, a 400‑kilometre route from the Stelvio Pass to the Marmolada, passes through this area and forms part of the wider Sentiero d’Italia network.

Lake Lavarone in summer and winter

The lake features two equipped beaches, on the north and south shores, where visitors can swim, rent pedal boats and rowboats. The surrounding area offers scenic hiking trails, mountain‑bike routes and a rock‑climbing wall.

Lake Lavarone is also a Bike‑Friendly destination, offering dedicated services and discounts for cyclists. In winter, the lake freezes and becomes a natural rink for ice‑skating, while under‑ice diving courses attract adventure lovers. Every year, at the end of June, the lake hosts an important triathlon race combining swimming, cycling and running.

In 2025, Lake Lavarone once again earned the prestigious Blue Flag award, confirming the exceptional quality of its waters and its commitment to environmental sustainability. This international recognition highlights the dedication of local institutions and residents in protecting the lake and its natural surroundings.
