Lake Calaita

Lake Calaita, located at 1,605 metres in the enchanting Lozen Valley, is one of the most iconic places in the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino Nature Park. This small alpine lake, overlooking the majestic Pale di San Martino and surrounded by the forests of the Lagorai, is an unmissable destination for anyone visiting the Primiero area.

A natural paradise

The lake opens onto a wide grassy plateau known as Campìgol del Doch, where pastures, peat bogs, and forests of spruce and larch create a harmonious and pristine landscape. The view of the Pale is among the most photographed in all of Trentino: on clear days, the peaks reflect in the calm waters of the lake, offering postcard‑perfect scenery.

Hiking and outdoor activities

Lake Calaita is the ideal starting point for numerous hikes and bike tours, suitable for both families and more experienced hikers. From here, you can reach San Martino di Castrozza in about 4–5 hours round trip, or explore the impressive peaks of the Lagorai range, such as Cima Folga, Cima Scanaiol, Cima Tognola, Cima Valsorda, and Cima Arzòn, as well as the many small alpine lakes located above 2,000 metres. Excursions to Malga Lozen and Malga Grugola – Forcella Folga and Forcella Grugola are also highly recommended.

In winter, the snow‑covered landscape offers opportunities for cross‑country skiing, snowshoeing, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk in the silence of the mountains.

Flora and fauna

The area around Lake Calaita is rich in biodiversity. The spruce and larch forests are home to many species of wildlife, such as deer, roe deer, and foxes, while the lake’s waters attract various species of waterfowl. Fish species include brown trout, minnows, rudd (non‑native), and some arctic char. The area also hosts numerous amphibians, including the common toad, mountain frog, fire salamander, and alpine newt.
