The Lago Brutto, located at 2,207 meters in the heart of the Lagorai, is one of the most distinctive alpine lakes in the Val di Fiemme. Despite its curious name, this body of water is a fascinating place, set among dark porphyry rocks and surrounded by a wild, unspoiled environment. The lakes in the area – including Lago Brutto, Lago delle Trote, and Lago di Moregna – are all of glacial origin and lie mainly on the northern side of the Lagorai, where the action of ancient glaciers carved basins, hollows, and small plateaus. The area below the glacial ridge is rich in peat bogs, streams, and clearings that make the landscape particularly evocative.
The Lagorai is known for its wild and scarcely inhabited nature: larch forests, mountain pine, high‑altitude pastures, and wide open views create an ideal environment for those seeking peace and authenticity. Lago Brutto perfectly embodies this character, offering a quiet and remote atmosphere, far from the more frequented trails. Like many alpine lakes situated above two thousand meters, Lago Brutto remains very cold throughout the year, which is why swimming is not recommended, both for safety reasons and to protect the delicate ecosystem.
