Monte Cavallo (2,176 m), the “sun mountain” above Vipiteno, is an ideal destination for an easy ski mountaineering excursion. The itinerary is also suitable for beginners: the ascent is gentle, safe, and offers spectacular views over the Isarco Valley, the Fleres Dolomites, and as far as the Brenner Pass.
Ascent route
- The starting point is at the top station of the cable car.
- Take the trail to the right, outside the ski slopes, passing by the Sterzingerhaus, one of the most renowned huts in the area.
- Continue to the snow-covered Kastellacke biotope, a small alpine lake that in winter becomes a charming frozen landscape.
- From here, turn left and follow the track below the ridge until you reach the summit of Monte Cavallo.
Descent
The descent takes place along the ski slopes of the Monte Cavallo ski area, with about 20 km of perfectly groomed runs. The slopes vary in difficulty (blue, red, and one black), making them suitable for different levels of experience.
