The Kraxentrager (2,999–3,008 m) is one of the most fascinating peaks for ski mountaineering in Val di Vizze (Pfitschtal), on the southern side of the Tuxer Hauptkamm. It is a steep and demanding tour, recommended for experienced ski mountaineers, offering spectacular views of the Gran Pilastro (Hochfeiler), the Isarco Valley, and Vipiteno.
Ascent Route
- Start from Weiler/San Giacomo (1,438 m): walk 100 m along the road towards San Giacomo.
- Initial meadow: cross the large meadow heading north, passing the Samerhof farm on the right.
- Into the forest: follow trail 3A towards the Landshuter Europahütte until the sign for Pirstlingalm (approx. 1,850 m).
- Towards the alpine pasture: pass the Pirstlingalm on the left and keep slightly to the right, first on flat terrain and then increasingly steep, up to the saddle near the old military barracks.
- Final ridge: continue slightly left and climb directly along the very steep ridge.
- Ski depot: on the wide ridge, about 50 m below the summit, is the ideal spot to leave skis.
- Summit: on foot, along the last snowy section, reach the summit cross of the Kraxentrager (2,999–3,008 m).
Descent
The descent follows the same route as the ascent, with wide and skiable slopes that require caution, especially in windblown or transformed snow conditions.

- Panoramas: from the summit, enjoy exceptional views of the Gran Pilastro, the Croda Alta, and Val di Vizze.
- Support points: Landshuter Europahütte (2,710 m) and Rifugio Venna alla Gerla are excellent references along the route.
- Snow conditions: always check avalanche bulletins; slopes below the saddle may be subject to dangerous accumulations.
