Ascent to the Gran Pilastro

The Gran Pilastro (3,510 m) is a superlative colossus surrounded by lookouts, with the highest peak in South Tyrol east of the Brenner Pass and 130 kilometres along the border watershed.

From Sterzing, head towards Val di Vizze, where you can park at the 3rd hairpin bend on the Pfitscher-Joch Straße (Pfitscher-Joch Road). Here, take trail no. 1 up to the barns and on a continuous ascent into the valley. Continue uphill to the scree basin and along a grassy ramp to a crossroads. Here, keep to the left and follow the signs for the summit of the Gran Pilastro (trail 8A and 1A). With a little ascent, the ridge is reached. Continue until you reach the summit. Possibility of refreshments: Rifugio Gran Pilastro.
