The Paths of Memory – Medium Trail

The route begins near the sports facilities of Longarone, where you follow the initial stretch leading to the famous ponte‑tubo, a suspended walkway that immediately immerses you in the unique atmosphere of the Vajont gorge. After crossing the bridge, the trail climbs steadily, gaining altitude until it reaches the open galleries of the provincial road, where the view opens onto the deep ravine carved by the torrent and the imposing arch of the Vajont Dam.

Here you leave the province of Belluno and enter Friuli‑Venezia Giulia, while the enormous scar of the Monte Toc landslide appears before your eyes—the rocky mass that in 1963 plunged into the reservoir, generating the wave that destroyed Longarone.

The path continues toward the crest of the Vajont Dam, crossed via a steel walkway suspended about 260 meters above the ground - an exhilarating section that reveals the true scale of the structure and the depth of the gorge. Once past the dam, the trail bends toward the right side of the valley and crosses the landslide area, now stabilized but still marked by the force of the event.

Reaching the village of Casso, perched on a rocky spur, you are greeted by an authentic and silent atmosphere. From here, the descent begins along the Troi de Sant’Antoni, an ancient pedestrian route that once connected the Belluno area with Friuli and was used by merchants and inhabitants of the two valleys. The trail descends toward Codissago, through woods and panoramic viewpoints, before gently returning to Longarone, where the itinerary comes to an end.
