An excursion that blends history, nature and the authentic landscapes of Val Venosta: the circular trail along the Leitenwaal and Bergwaal irrigation channels is one of the most scenic hikes around Sluderno. It’s an easy route, suitable for everyone, following the ancient waal canals typical of South Tyrol and offering unforgettable views of larch forests, sunny slopes and medieval castles.
Starting from Sluderno, in the heart of Val Venosta
The trail begins near the Val Venosta Museum, just outside the centre of Sluderno. From here, the route leads towards one of the valley’s most iconic landmarks: the impressive Castel Coira, perfectly preserved and framed by orchards and terraced hillsides.
Along the Bergwaal: forests, silence and history
After passing the castle, the path continues towards the Vernalhof farmstead, where the evocative Bergwaal trail begins. This ancient irrigation channel runs alongside steep slopes and crosses mystical larch woods, creating a fresh and peaceful atmosphere. The Bergwaal leads to the gorge of the Saldur stream, a panoramic point marking the transition to the second part of the loop.
Returning along the Leitenwaal
From the gorge, the route follows the historic Leitenwaal, gently descending towards the valley. The path remains comfortable and with minimal elevation gain, gradually returning to the starting point and completing a perfect loop for those who enjoy slow-paced walks immersed in nature.
