TThe spectacular Castel Coldrano stands in the village of Coldrano, near Laces in Val Venosta, in a quiet and sunny position surrounded by vineyards and orchards. Castel Coldrano is considered one of the most important Renaissance monuments in South Tyrol and today provides an elegant setting for conferences, exhibitions, and other cultural events. The manor can only be visited with a guided tour.
The history of Castel Coldrano
The origins of Castel Coldrano date back to the Middle Ages. On top of a pre-existing Romanesque structure, the residential wing of the Hendl Counts was built in the 16th century. The family already owned other castles in Tyrol, including Castelbello, Castel Juval, and Castel Mareccio. In 1862, the Hendl family sold the castle to the municipality, which decided to use it as a school and shelter for local residents.
Many architectural elements—its position, the surrounding walls, the cylindrical corner towers—give Castel Coldrano the appearance of a noble residence rather than a massive defensive structure. The entrance gate, decorated with finely worked Lasa marble, and the courtyard with its beautiful arcades and columns further enhance this impression of harmonious residential architecture. Another noteworthy feature is preserved in the cellar area: an ancient wine press dating back to the 18th century.
Today, after extensive restoration work, Castel Coldrano offers its interior rooms—some equipped with advanced technology—for cultural and musical events, as well as local and international training activities.
