Skiing on Monte Cavallo in Vipiteno

Just a few minutes' walk from the historic centre of Vipiteno, Monte Cavallo (Rosskopf) is one of the most appreciated destinations in South Tyrol for experiencing the mountains in every season. Connecting Vipiteno with the mountain station is a modern 10-seater cable car, which allows you to reach Monte Cavallo in about 12 minutes. Once at altitude, a world of outdoor activities opens up: from skiing to hiking, from sledging to scenic walks, to experiences dedicated to families.

Skiing on Monte Cavallo: 20 km of sunny slopes

In winter, the Monte Cavallo ski area offers approximately 20 kilometres of slopes, ideal for both those who want to learn to ski and more experienced skiers. The slopes, predominantly sunny and surrounded by a suggestive Alpine landscape, allow you to spend a day on the snow with views of the South Tyrolean mountains.

The proximity to the centre of Vipiteno makes Monte Cavallo particularly convenient even for those staying in the city: the cable car allows you to reach the ski area directly without having to face long car transfers.

And for those who love alternating skiing with fun, the mountain offers one of its most spectacular attractions: a 10-kilometre-long sledging slope, snow-covered and illuminated, considered the longest in Italy. A descent to experience with family or friends, between curves and winter scenery.

Sledging in the evening and skiing at dawn

On Monte Cavallo, the snow experience doesn't stop at sunset. During the winter season it is also possible to experience the thrill of night sledging, with the slope illuminated until midnight on evenings scheduled in the seasonal programme.

For those who instead love being the first to leave their marks on the snow, there's the Early Bird: every Friday, from 26 December 2025 to 27 February 2026, the facilities open already at 7:00. It's the opportunity to start the day on the slopes on freshly groomed pistes and enjoy the morning light on the mountains.

Walking on the snow towards the Flaner Jöchl

Not just skiing and sledging: Monte Cavallo is also an ideal destination for those seeking tranquillity, nature and winter walks.

Among the most suggestive itineraries is the circular path towards Flaner Jöchl, almost 6 kilometres long. The route, well-trodden and suitable for families too, crosses snowy woods and wide panoramic spaces. To complete the excursion, approximately two hours are needed and snowshoes are not essential.

Along the way you encounter welcoming mountain huts, including the Furlhütte and the Sterzingerhaus, perfect for a break and to savour the specialities of South Tyrolean cuisine.

Monte Cavallo in summer: hiking and fun at altitude

With the arrival of fine weather, the landscape of Monte Cavallo changes completely. The snowy slopes give way to green alpine pastures, woods and scenic paths, transforming the area into an ideal starting point for mountain excursions and walks.

The cable car allows you to conveniently reach the altitude and start several itineraries immersed in nature from here. It is also an ideal solution for families who want to spend a day in the mountains without giving up comfort.

Among the most loved summer attractions is the Panorama Mountain Coaster, a summer sledging slope that offers curves, descents and lots of fun for young and old.

How to get to Monte Cavallo

Monte Cavallo (Rosskopf) is easily reached from the centre of Vipiteno. The valley station of the cable car is just a few minutes from the city and is conveniently accessible by car, train and public transport.

By car: Vipiteno is connected to the A22 Brenner motorway and the motorway exit is just a few kilometres from the valley station of Monte Cavallo.

By train: Vipiteno railway station is served by regional connections along the Brenner line. From the station you can easily reach the cable car with local transport services.

For those arriving by plane, the airports of Innsbruck and Bolzano are the closest options, while Verona and Munich also offer connections to Vipiteno.
