The Altopiano della Paganella is shaped by numerous karst phenomena, and the Andalo Lake is one of its most fascinating examples. Located just a short walk from the centre of Andalo and close to the Lago di Molveno, it is a periodic karst basin: the lake actually “appears and disappears” depending on rainfall and the complex underground water exchanges typical of karst environments.
With no surface inflows or outflows, the lake fills in spring and autumn, when water emerges from a series of natural “funnels” and fills the basin carved into the limestone, while during drier periods it can almost vanish entirely underground.
The Andalo Lake lies at 998 m a.s.l., at the foot of Monte Piz Galin, surrounded by the Dolomiti di Brenta and the Paganella, in a highly scenic landscape.
Loop trail around the Andalo Lake
Around the shores of the lake runs a loop trail of about 2.5–2.6 km, flat and suitable for everyone, including strollers. The route lies within the green area of Andalo Life, in the heart of the Parco Naturale Adamello-Brenta, and is popular both for relaxing walks and as a training path for runners.
The path is mostly paved and wide, offering beautiful views of the Dolomiti di Brenta on one side and the Paganella on the other. Along the way you can observe aquatic plants, seasonal blooms, ducks and other small animals that make the loop particularly enjoyable, especially for families.
