The Brigata Tridentina via ferrata to Pisciadù is one of the most famous and popular equipped routes in the Dolomites, a spectacular itinerary that blends adrenaline, vertical scenery and an unforgettable finale on the iconic suspension bridge at 2430 m. The starting point is located at the 8th hairpin bend of the SS 243, between Passo Gardena and Colfosco, where a convenient parking area allows you to leave the car before beginning the approach.
Approach: towards the large ledge at the base of the wall
From the parking area at 1956 m, follow the well-marked path leading to the wide ledge at the foot of the wall. After about 45 minutes, the trail meets the path coming from Passo Gardena and reaches the start of the via ferrata, near a small waterfall that introduces the vertical environment of the climb.
The ascent: exposed ledges, articulated walls and the Torre Exner
The first section climbs beside the waterfall, with cables, rungs and exposed ledges that require sure footing and attention. Once past this stretch, the route reaches the entrance of a gully and continues toward the Torre Exner, where the most technical and spectacular part of the ferrata begins.
Those who prefer to avoid the more demanding passages can leave the ferrata and follow the gully on a non‑equipped trail, free of difficulties, which also leads to Rifugio Pisciadù—an ideal variant for less experienced hikers.
The suspension bridge at 2430 m: the symbol of the Tridentina
Continuing along the equipped route, the climb tackles the wall of the Torre Exner with vertical but well‑structured passages, eventually reaching the metal ladder that leads to the famous suspension bridge. This crossing, one of the most photographed in the Dolomites, connects the Torre Exner to the Masores de Pisciadù, in the heart of the Sella massif.
Arrival at Rifugio Pisciadù
After the bridge, an easy panoramic ledge leads to the Rifugio Franco Cavazza al Pisciadù (2586 m), overlooking the lake of the same name. The total ascent time is about 1h45.
Descent through Val Setus
The descent follows trail 666, dropping westward into the wild environment of Val Setus. The route alternates rocky stretches with fixed ropes, scree slopes and, early in the season, possible snowfields. Once at the valley exit, leave the path toward Passo Gardena and continue straight down the scree to return to the parking area in about 1h30.
