The Val Venosta hides one of its most authentic corners on the slopes of the Nörderberg, where the Zirmtal Lakes shine like two turquoise gems set among ancient larches and stone pines. The hike starts from the “Alte Säge / Vecchia Segheria” car park above Castelbello. From here, you follow forest road no. 7, which climbs steadily through a cool, shaded woodland until reaching the Marzoner Alm, an ideal spot for a break.
Above the alpine hut, the trail changes character: it continues along trail no. 18, steeper and rockier, crossing clearings and forest sections until reaching Schweinstall, where the landscape opens up and the environment becomes distinctly alpine. In May and June, this stretch is especially scenic thanks to the blooming of alpine roses.
The final section is the most demanding: the path climbs sharply along the ridge, offering increasingly wide views over the Val Venosta. After about 3–4 hours of hiking, you reach the suspended basin of the Zirmtal Lakes, two crystal‑clear mountain lakes at over 2,100 metres. Here you will also find the Zirmtalalm, a rustic and panoramic alpine hut that adds an authentic touch to the experience.
