These are historic days for Team Italy at the Olympic Games, celebrating two historic medals in luge, an extraordinary gold medal in short track, and an important bronze medal in curling, further strengthening Italy’s position among the leading nations of the Games.
Italy struck gold at the Ice Skating Arena, where a historic victory came in the mixed short track relay. The quartet made up of Elisa Confortola, Arianna Fontana, Thomas Nadalini and Pietro Sighel dominated the 2,000-metre final, taking the lead on the fifth lap and extending their advantage to the finish line ahead of Canada (silver) and Belgium (bronze). Also awarded the medal were Chiara Betti and Luca Spechenhauser, who competed respectively in the first semifinal and in the opening quarterfinal heat, which saw Italy finish second behind the Netherlands. For Italy, this marks the fourth Olympic gold in short track history.
Further Italian success came at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium, with a bronze medal in mixed doubles curling. Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner defeated Great Britain 5–3, securing a place on the podium.
Additional historic results arrived on the new Cortina Sliding Center track. Among the standout moments were the gold medal in women’s doubles luge won by Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhofer, followed around one hour later by the prestigious medal in men’s doubles luge claimed by Emanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner. A double achievement that rewards the work of Team Italy and highlights the excellence of Cortina’s new sliding track.
With these results, Italy’s medal tally rises to 13 medals overall: 4 golds, 2 silvers and 7 bronzes, confirming an Olympic Games that has been memorable so far for Italy.
