Castel Mareccio, known in German as Schloss Maretsch, is located just a few steps from the historic centre of Bolzano, surrounded by a picturesque landscape of vineyards along the Talvera river. Thanks to its central location and scenic setting, it is one of the most charming and easily accessible castles in the city.
Originally built in the 12th century, Castel Mareccio today features the elegant appearance of a 16th-century Renaissance residence, the result of major transformations commissioned by the Römer family during the Renaissance period.
A brief history of Castel Mareccio
The oldest part of the castle is the keep, built in 1194 by Berthold von Bozen, the first known owner of the manor. Over the centuries, the castle passed through several noble families until the decisive Renaissance renovation, which gave it its distinctive four round towers and richly decorated interior halls.
In later centuries, Castel Mareccio served various purposes, including an arms depot and the State Archives. After a careful restoration in the 1980s, it became one of Bolzano’s main venues for cultural events, exhibitions and conferences.
What to see at Castel Mareccio
A visit to the castle allows you to admire:
- the Renaissance frescoed halls, created by unknown artists
- the inner courtyard, often used for concerts and cultural events
- the unique setting of urban vineyards, a rare feature in European cities
Of particular interest is the Magic Square of Sator, visible on the second floor only with a guided tour. This famous Latin palindrome dating back to the 16th century is one of the most mysterious symbols of Castel Mareccio.
