Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics: the Italian medal tally after the first two days

09 February 2026

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics kicked off with great spectacle, and the Italian athletes have already delivered thrilling moments on the podium. After the first days of competition, Italy has won 9 medals: 1 gold, 2 silver, and 6 bronze across downhill skiing, speed skating, biathlon, snowboarding, luge, and figure skating.

Double victory in skiing: men's downhill

On the opening Saturday, the Italians were the protagonists on the legendary “Stelvio” piste in Bormio for the men's downhill. Italy achieved a historic double:

  • Silver for Giovanni Franzoni, in his Olympic debut, with an outstanding performance.
  • Bronze for Dominik Paris, a veteran of alpine skiing, who adds another medal to his career achievements.

Bronze in women's downhill

On the famous Olimpia delle Tofane in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the highlight of the women's program took place: the downhill, one of the most anticipated and technically demanding events. Here, Sofia Goggia, already Olympic champion in the discipline (gold in Pyeongchang 2018 and silver in Beijing 2022), claimed a prestigious bronze medal, completing her Olympic downhill medal collection with all three colors.

The Olimpia delle Tofane track has historically been one of Goggia’s favorites: in the World Cup, the Bergamo athlete has achieved memorable victories here, excelling multiple times in Cortina’s downhill and cementing her status as a top contender in speed events.

Other Italian medals

Other podium finishes for Italy came across different disciplines on snow and ice:

  • Gold for Francesca Lollobrigida in the women's 3000 m speed skating at Collalbo, Renon, where she also set a new Olympic record with a time of 3:54.28, on her birthday.
  • Silver in the mixed biathlon relay, with the Italian team composed of Lisa Vittozzi, Dorothea Wierer, Tommaso Giacomel, and Lukas Hofer.
  • Bronze for Lucia Dalmasso in the women's parallel giant slalom snowboarding.
  • Bronze for Riccardo Lorello in the men’s 5000 m speed skating.
  • Bronze in the figure skating team event, contributed by Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri (ice dance), Sara Conti and Niccolò Macii (pairs), Naki Gutmann and Grassi (women’s singles), and Matteo Rizzo (men’s singles).
  • Bronze for Dominik Fischnaller in the men’s singles luge.

With these medals, Italy confirms its strength across all Olympic disciplines, combining expected victories with exciting surprises on snow and ice.
