Rifugio Contrin

The Rifugio Contrin rests atop the eponymous valley in Canazei in Val di Fassa. At 2016 m and at the footsteps of the steep north faces of Cima Ombretta, Vernel, and Marmolada, it is an excellent starting point for hiking and climbing. Easily reachable by foot via a dirt road starting from the village of Alba, it is also a reference point for some cross-country hiking, including the Alta Via 2, the Monaco-Venezia and the Via Alpina. From which you can enjoy a breathtaking 360° panorama of the Marmolada and Sassolungo peaks.

Its story begins on July 28, 1897, with the inauguration of the "Contrinhaus", wanted by the Nuremberg section of the Alpenverein. Destroyed on September 6, 1915, the refuge was rebuilt by the Alpine National Association and reopened between August and September 1926. Three years later, the adjoining shelter was erected. In 1930, a small chapel dedicated to the fallen of the mountain and a bronze statue honoring Francesco Barbieri, Gold Medal recipient for Valor for the 7th Alpine, were built. Today the Rifugio Contrin is a magnificent reality in one of the most majestic and pristine mountain corners.

This property offers both overnight stays and a bar-restaurant. The 10 cozy rooms are equipped with bed linen, heating, bathroom with shower, hot water, and TV, made available to those who plan to stay a few extra days. The refuge also has bunks available.

The cuisine is excellent, and you must try the polenta with venison and mushrooms, tagliatelle with forest fragrance, and strudel.
