Guàna del Primiero

08 January 2026

Those visiting Primiero today can discover a place where art, landscape and Alpine culture come together in a unique way: La Guàna, the new artwork by artist Marco Martalar, standing 7 metres tall and made up of more than 2,000 pieces of wood and roots recovered from the forests of Primiero after the devastation caused by Storm Vaia in 2018.

La Guàna is born from these remains: broken and seemingly unusable wood is transformed into living material, reassembled into an artwork that invites reflection on the relationship between humans and nature and on the need to live alongside the mountains in a more conscious and respectful way.

This is not just an art installation, but a visual symbol of the mountains’ ability to regenerate, turning destruction into a new story of resilience.

The legend of the Guàne

The subject of the sculpture is inspired by the ancient legends of Primiero, an intangible heritage that still tells the story of the deep connection between people, nature and the Dolomites. The Guàne were mythical beings linked to water, believed to be protective spirits of streams, springs and Alpine lakes, representing a natural balance based on mutual respect.

According to Primiero folklore, these creatures lived in specific, evocative places such as the Sass de le Guàne, at the foot of Castèl Pietra, one of the valley’s most fascinating historic sites. Legends say that the Guàne could interact with humans, share everyday life and even form a family, blurring the line between reality and myth.

This bond, however, was governed by one essential rule: their true nature was never to be revealed. When humans tried to force the mystery or dominate what they could not understand, the spell was broken and the Guàna disappeared forever. Today, this story conveys a powerful cultural and tourism message: the mountains must be experienced with respect, not domination.

Where La Guàna is located and how to get there

The sculpture is located in the Parco Benessere Navoi in Transacqua. La Guàna can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot from Transacqua or Fiera di Primiero, along quiet paved roads. The route is suitable for families with children, strollers and less experienced walkers.

Where to park
The recommended parking area is the Bus station/Primiero pool, also convenient for visiting the Tourist Information Office. Parking near the park is limited, so visitors are encouraged to respect the environment and private property.

La Guàna invites visitors to slow down, observe and reflect – a contemporary, powerful message deeply connected to the Dolomites and their identity.
