Summer skiing in Trentino and South Tyrol

Some areas of the Dolomites are suitable for summer skiing. On the glaciers in fact you can often ski from May to October, depending on snow conditions. The places where you can ski under the summer sun are Val Senales and Stelvio Pass in South Tyrol, and the Presena Glacier in Trentino.

These small and medium sized ski centers are very well equipped and perfect for all those who wish the ski season to never end. An interesting alternative to overcrowded sunny beaches, for a holiday spent at high altitudes: the ski runs are in fact above 3000 meters, and the swift, efficient lifts allow you to enjoy at best the many hours of light of summer days.

South Tyrol features two ski centers: the Val Senales valley near Merano and the Stelvio Pass, which is the largest summer skiing area in the Alps.

The lifts of Val Senales, closed for a short time in May, open again in June. A modern gondola lift takes you on Giogo Alto, and from here an 8 km ski run takes you back to the valley floor. The small ski center is well equipped and suitable for everyone: beginners, kids and experts. And for those who prefer cross-country skiing, there is a trail right on the glacier, often used as summer training camp by national teams.

The Stelvio Pass opens for summer skiing enthusiasts at the end of May, closing at the end of October/November. There are over 20 km slopes developing at an altitude between 2758 and 3450 meters, six ski lifts, three cross-country skiing trails and a snowboard park. Its unique and spectacular ski runs are open until 5 pm, and it's not unusual to see some ski champion skiing here.

Trentino has its own glacier for summer skiing: the Presena Glacier in the Val di Sole valley. You can get there taking a modern gondola lift from the Tonale Pass up to the 2,585 meters of the Paradiso Pass, and from there to the glacier, at an altitude of 3,069 meters. The ski center features a ski tour in areas where the First World War was fought, and is especially appreciated by free riders, who have at their disposal many off-piste routes.
