Sella Pass summer closure confirmed

Yesterday morning in Bolzano a press conference was held to present the public with the #DolomitesVives - Dolomites Live initiative, a series of collateral events that will take place during the closing of the Sella Pass beginning on July 5 and for nine Wednesdays, until the end of August.

The Trentino-Alto Adige Dolomite Pass will see limited traffic from 9am to 4pm leaving streets open to pedestrians, cyclists, low-emission public transport, and non-polluting vehicles. The goal is to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to the conservation of nature in the Dolomites. It is important to remember that since 2009, the dolomitic ranges have been declared a World Heritage by UNESCO for their aesthetic and landscapes and scientific significance in the geological and geomorphological field, so it is vital to continue to maintain these attributes.

The decision was made after years of studies and discussions between the provinces of Trento and Bolzano, but only yesterday, was this initiative formally adopted. Studies have shown that annual transit on the Sella Pass exceeds 1.2 million vehicles, with a daily average of over 2,300 and 450 vehicles per hour in August. Only 50% of this traffic stops in the area for 6 or 7 hours and thus an interesting events program was created to entertain the many visiting tourists.
These events, scheduled on Wednesdays, will surround three main themes: music, education, and cooking. Tourists will be able to attend concerts, participate in gastronomic events, and meet the main players of the mountain and VIPs. The first of these nine VIP events will start with Reinhold Messner, an important mountaineer, writer, and explorer of South Tyrol.

At the same time as the Pass closing, works are planned to improve public transportation service both in Trentino and South Tyrol, as well as some safety related measures, such as creating a place for busses to make U-turns and, near the Miramonti crossroads, a similar space for cars to do the same.

Later on, a complete events program will be published.
