The life of San Romedio

The figure of San Romedio is a clear example of the phenomenon of the hermits that developed in Europe between the X and XI centuries.
Romedio, whose figure is linked to many legends, belonged to a rich and noble Family from Tyrol, and was the lord of Thaur castle, near Innsbruck, and of many rich salt mines in the Inn valley.

During a pilgrimage to Rome he decided to retire to a penance life and gave all his properties to the Church. After that he retired to an isolated place and dedicated his life to God. He lived in complete austerity, praying plunged into the nature and living in a cave, the one where nowadays the Sanctuary lies.
