The lake is situated at Ferrari, in the municipality of Baselga di Piné. In 1971 it became the first protected biotope in Trentino.
This is an interesting conservation area, safeguarded by a regional law. Laghestel is an age-old lake, which had become almost completely a bog and turned into swamplands, but there is a remaining water surface still considerably wide, surrounded by a vast cane thicket.
The flora is very variegated and some species are protected.
In summer the unicellular alga that grows on the lake bed turns it red and confers a singular appearance to the landscape.
