Velturno chestnuts' way: a classic hike to the monastery of Sabiona Convent

Starting-point: Velturno/Feldthurns (856 mt.)
At a glance: Velturno/Feldthurns - Pradel - Sabiona Convent - Chiusa/Klausen
Lowest point: Chiusa/Klausen (525 mt.)
Difference in altitude: 331 m
Difficulty: two climbing-boots hike

Useful advice: easy hike, sometimes a bit slipping, which mainly covers descents or flat stretches. It goes across the landscapes of inferior Val d'Isarco/Eisacktal, which has a prevalently peasant culture and is filled with huts, meadows and chestnut copses. Sabiona Convent and Chiusa/Klausen are the symbolic locations of those pLaces/Latsch. Recommended to elders and families.

Itinerary description: starting from Unterwirt and proceeding on footpath number 12 we arrive at the little church of S. Antonio. Here we continue straightforwardly towards Radoar and Moar zu Viers huts; later we turn right going over a field to arrive at the huts' access road.
On this way (still footpath 12) we reach the chestnut copses and the lonely Weinbrenner Hut (860 mt.). We proceed on footpath number 12 across the larches wood and the grassy slopes till Moar zu Viers Hut, near to the beautiful chapel of S. Giuseppe (775 mt.; here there is a commemorative plate of Tyrol independence wars). At this point we go on along some other huts on footpath number 1 and then we go down across some hairpin bends till Sabiona Convent(729 mt.; visit of the place and of some nice churches; pretty view of Chiusa/Klausen).
The hillock of Sabiona Convent/Kloster Säben was inhabited already during prehistoric ages. In the first millennium the bishops' seat was just here and only after the 10th century the bishops moved to Bressanone/Brixen. In the following ages this place became the residence of the lords of Sabiona Convent, then, around the 17th century, the Benedictines monks settled here. From Sabiona Convent we go down using one of the following paths: the Pilgerweg (Pilgrim's way) number 1 or the Sabiona Convent promenade. Both paths conduct to Chiusa/Klausen (525 mt.; refreshment available; pretty town centre). Finally we return to Velturno/Feldthurns by bus.
