Carnival in Romarzollo
Romarzollo - Arco | from 26.02.2012 to 26.02.2012
A particular Carnival, an ancient tradition influenced by both alpine and Mediterranean cultures, is celebrated on the first Sunday in Lent in Romarzollo di Arco. This year the event will be celebrated on 26th February.
Celebrations are organized by the youths of the different hamlets (Chiarano, Varignano and Vigne). These build the “Carnevali”: bamboo and laurel pyramids (these plants are typical of high lake Garda) decorated with colored eggshells (symbolizing fertility), ribbons, streamers and many kinds of food (sweets, salami, fruits).
A young boy is hidden under each Carnevale, and keeps on ringing a cowbell, as the “pyramid” is carried in a loud procession, surrounded by youths singing the singsong “Carnival de la bruta gial” and shaking laurel branches (“solagni”).
After having done a round in the village, the procession reaches the Tiera rise, where food is distributed among the present and the carnevali are burned in a merry bonfire, with grostoi (typical sweet crispy pastry) and mulled wine.
