A ski holiday in Alleghe, the cradle of mountaineering

Alleghe is one of the best known and appreciated resorts for mountain lovers. It is a famous destination for climbers, who year after year arrive here to brave what the locals call “wall of the walls”: the northern side of the Civetta Mountain. This face, with its many climbing routes, all of high difficulty levels, and one of the largest vertical surfaces of the Dolomites, is known in the world of mountaineering as “reign of the sixth grade”.
This resort is also one of the favourite destinations for trekking lovers, thanks to the special charm of the many paths winding through the valley and up to the surrounding mountains, unique landscapes that have always attracted those who like this sport. One example is the route going from Piani di Pezzè to the Coldai mountain tarn, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Alleghe and its lake. If you are looking for more challenging treks, you shouldn’t forget the whole area is crossed by the Haute Route n. 1.

Being one of the resorts included in the Ski Civetta ski area, every winter Alleghe is visited by many skiers, arriving here to spend their holidays in one of the largest and most exciting ski areas of the Dolomites. In a few moments the cable way takes you to the top, at the heart of the ski area, and here you will be ready to test and improve your skills on more than forty large and fast ski slopes of every level. In Alleghe there are two ski schools, where competent instructors will introduce you to the world of winter sports or will help you hone your technique, offering lessons for every discipline, from snowboarding to ski carving and telemark skiing. Kids can have fun and at the same time learn how to ski in the Happy Park, the winter playground and ski kindergarten on the Piani di Pezzè. Snowboarders can enjoy a snowpark known for having always new and well kept structures, visited by many riders famous on a national level. Moreover, Alleghe has one of the strongest hockey teams of Italy, since 1945 playing in the Serie A championship. The matches are often played in the ice rink of Alleghe, where you can also practice ice skating and see concerts. Or you can choose to go for a quiet snowshoe hike to immerse yourself in the silence of the surrounding hills and woods.

Alleghe is well known also by mountain bikers, who thanks to the lift facilities quickly reach high altitudes and then dash down breathtaking descents or brave the many trails winding through the woods and the uncontaminated nature. The resort is also an ideal starting point for street bicycle and motorbike lovers, since it lies in a central position among some of the most beautiful passes of the Dolomites: Duran, Staulanza, Falzarego, Giau, Pordoi, Campolongo and Fedaia. Moreover, Alleghe is crossed by the Giro d’Italia.

One of the greatest attractions of Alleghe is its lake, thanks to the many activities it allows you to practice, from windsurfing to sailing, from canoeing or kayaking to easier rowing boat or pedalo trips, from sport fishing to the tour around the lake, an easy two hours walk to admire the wonderful landscape. In winter you can practice ice skating on its frozen surface.

Many are the events, some of international level, taking place in Alleghe: the now famous Civetta Superbike, an international long-distance mountain biking race; the Civettissima, a nighttime mountain biking uphill time trial from Piani di Pezzè to Col dei Baldi; the Transcivetta, a mountain race walking to be performed in pairs; sport fishing competitions and illuminated boat parades.
